Saturn Devouring One of His Children

One was all it took.
His pride and reign would be demolished.
Didn't care how it would look.
He couldn't be abolished.
One by one they were destroyed.
His wife deceived him with one.
At last he was overjoyed.
Only to be outdone.
"HE" came back to declare peace.
His father was expendable.
The time allowed his guard to be released.
He believed his wife to be dependable.
Now cannibalism is no more.
1 to 1 is the final score.

Shakespeare Sonnet

So are you to my thoughts as food to life,
Or as sweet-seasoned showers are to the ground;
And for the peace of you I hold such strife
As 'twixt a miser and his wealth is found.
Now proud as an enjoyer, and anon
Doubting the filching age will steal his treasure,
Now counting best to be with you alone,
Then bettered that the world may see my pleasure,
Sometime all full with feasting on your sight,
And by and by clean starved for a look,
Possessing or pursuing no delight
Save what is had, or must from you be took.
Thus do I pine and surfeit day by day,
Or gluttoning on all, or all away.

I think this sonnet is glorifying someone or something. There is a sense that this person might believe that what they are glorifying something other people don't approve of. This may be the reason why the speaker refers to it as glutton. If someone is a glutton, then they are gorging themselves on something they don't need.

The Wife of Bath

I think that the wife is not someone that women today should be proud of. Today's society looks down on those that have been married multiple times. It isn't that bad if someon has been married twice. No one can predict a marriage, but 5 times is just a little too excessive. Also, she says that she welcomes the sixth. Most women and men would view her as a floosy. I think I spelled that right.

Modern Day Pardoner

The pardoner is like a street hustler. He says he's doing something legitmate, but in reality he's just trying to get your money. He tells you what you want to hear. He tells you that what he has will make your life better and easier. At the end of the day all he wants to accomplish is make money while putting forth the least amount of effort possible.

Is Grendel a Monster?

I think that Grendel is a monster, because even though he was part human he still ate people. There's no justification for eating people unless you're a wild animal or in this case a monster. Then it's just looked at as horrible, but unpredictable. Throughout the story he showed wild animal or monster-like characteristics, even though he was considered a child and supposedly didn't know any better. His mother still treated him like a child, but only because she was his mother. The story from Grendel's point of view shows him in a different light. He showed human characteristics and showed Beowulf as a monster. He had articulation and a thought process. However, he was still excited about the fact that he was eating people. That's the only problem I have with giving him his "Human (Not Monster) Card."

Anglo-Saxon Riddle

In the heat we try to be as far as possible,
in the cold we pack closely together,
speeding in different directions you can't see us,
even if we moved as slow as you we would still be invisible to you,
you see us in three different forms daily,
what we be?

Nabokov's Good Readers and Writers

I agree with Nabokov on the ideals for a good reader and writer. I also think that he should change some of it. The three facets for a good writer are true but aren't necessary for a good book. The Enchanter and Storyteller part are fine, but I don't believe that a story has to necessarily teach a lesson to be considered good literature. Also all the aspects listened to be a good reader don't apply in every situation. You shouldn't have to belong to a book club to be a good reader. One of the aspects I do agree with is the idea that no matter how many times you read a book it should teach you something everytime. However, I want to add that you can't put a limit on how many books everyone needs to read. There shouldn't be a limit because these same aspects don't apply to everyone. With all of that said I genereally agree with Nabokov's ideas on what a good reader and good writer is.
